Spring into Color

I've been wearing more neutrals/solids than I ever have before, but I still love a good dose of color. These Steve Madden heels do that trick for me (which I alluded to in Tuesday's post). Paired with otherwise classic pieces (hello boyfriend shorts and blazer), these heels breathe new life into old tricks. The necklace tied the whole thing together and I think bright colors are a great way to elevate basics for the new season. The weather definitely has me feeling spring, so I wanted my outfit to reflect that.

Spotlight on Spring Shoes

When winter finally leaves town and spring comes in, it’s hard not to get excited. Our legs get the chance to breathe tights-free, and our toes make an appearance after a very long hibernation. If you've been reading Nines to 5 for a while, you know I love me some shoes! For some reason, buying a new pair of shoes is so therapeutic. Fabulous footwear can completely transform an outfit as well as your mood.

With spring upon us, it’s the perfect reason to swoon over some new shoes for the season. There are some fun styles trending this year, and the best part is there is a great variety of trends to suit just about everyone. If you need a little shoe shopping inspiration, below are some of my favorite spring trends!

Fringe

Lately, fashion has been very Western-inspired. And just when you thought you were buying too much fringe, along came sandals and heels with fringe that you just couldn’t say no to. Fringe is still in, but if you want to veer a bit from the Western theme, you can still pay homage to the trend with tassel ties, as seen on Maria on Point.

Lace-up Shoes

As you guys already know, lace-up shoes are definitely favorites of mine lately. They’re a more casual take on ballerina shoes but less extreme than the gladiator shoes of last year. Lace-ups add a perfect boho feel to a variety of spring dresses. I've shared some of my favorites below, but you can also browse Lyst's edit to get some spring styling ideas, as their photos often pair styles to watch for (like the right shoes and dresses).

Mules

Another must-have for spring is the mule. WhoWhatWear actually has dubbed 2016 as “the year of the mules.” A perk to wearing mules is that you know they will be comfortable because of the low, thick heels. They also look very chic without seeming “too trendy” for everyday wear—you can dress them up or down however you’d like, which you all know I love!

Bold Beach Sandals

Perhaps one of the best trends of all this spring is the fearless color and pattern play! Beach sandals shouldn’t be boring and all kinds of bold and bright sandals with pom-poms and other playful details are trending this season. They’re fun and carefree—ideal for beach days and summer vacations. I'll definitely be packing a pair of these in my bag for my trip to Mexico!

Day Date

There are few things I love more than a Saturday spent with great friends just gallivanting around the city. No real plans, no structure, just adventures and laughs. When we get days like this, I always want to wear something cute and casual for the day. I typically like to stick to flats so that I know my feet won't hurt if we end up walking a lot. We've had some great weather already and this day was warm enough for a skirt, but cool enough to need the layer from the jacket. I love transitional looks like this and can't wait to wear them more!

Jacket: Gap // Tee: Urban Outfitters // Skirt: J.Crew Factory [similar here + here] // Flats: J.Crew Factory (similar here + here) // Bag: Chloe // Rings: Stella & Dot // Necklace: Kendra Scott c/o // Sunnies: Nordstrom (only $12)

Friday Finds

Hi guys, happy Friday! Ok, but seriously, how is it the end of March already?! I spent the first part of the week in Portland so I'm happy to be back home for the weekend. I plan on spending a lot of it in pajamas and eating pizza! I can't wait to see everyone's Easter dresses (if that's what you celebrate). What do you guys have planned?

Black + Blue

I've talked about how much my style has evolved over the last two years and this outfit is a direct reflection of that. I used to never wear navy, let alone navy with black. Now, I think it looks super chic. I kept it spring-time ready by pairing it with white jeans and fun earrings. I bought these earrings during the Shopbop sale and I am OBSESSED. They are under $50 and so perfect for spring/summer. They will definitely be in my suitcase when we go to Mexico in May. What do you think about mixing black and blue?

My Closet Favorites

If you didn't know, I always "label" my posts with descriptors on what I'll be discussing in it. The tags range from "travel", to "home decor", to "chambray", and so many more. They're located at the bottom of the post, so if you click on any label, it'll bring up all the posts under that topic! Pretty cool, huh!? Recently I went through my tags to see which ones rose to the top in terms of number of appearances. I was pretty surprised to find there were some clear front-runners! Today I'm going to take you through these "top labels" and share the items that I wear the most. I thought that'd be fun because it'd be a good guide for what pieces you must have in your wardrobe and the different ways I styled them!

I'm going to share some favorites and also link a few relevant posts, but if you want to see more, there are always the tags! What was most interesting to me was how many posts incorporated these same pieces. For instance, the same look appeared in vest and distressed denim (and technically stripes, too)! I think it really shows how versatile these pieces are and how many looks you can create just by having these few items in your closet! What pieces do you get the most wear out of?

vest- Whether it be a longline vest, an excursion vest, or a denim vest, I am all about them! They add an extra layer of warmth but also an extra element of interest to any outfit. The most basic of outfits can be elevated by throwing on a vest. See my three favorite posts here, here, and here. And don't forget about the fur vest!

stripes - The thing I love most about stripes is that they're the ultimate versatile print. They can be dressed up, dressed down, or anywhere in between. Every clothing article every made comes in a striped version and it really allows you to stretch your wardrobe. I print-mix with stripes the most and low how much wear I get out of my striped pieces. It's a year-round go-to and I can't get enough. See three of my favorite looks here, here, and here.

distressed denim/boyfriend jeans - This may have been the most labeled piece I have. If you follow me on instagram, you see I wear ripped jeans practically every week, if not more. I have ripped jeans in almost every color and can always find a way to incorporate them into my looks. It's impossible to narrow down my favorite looks involving distressed denim, but this, this, and this are a good start!

pumps/heels - I know this one is super broad/vague but I just had to mention it. Finding the perfect heel feels like a lifelong task that will never get accomplished. I've had more than my fair share of bad eggs over the years, so when I find a pair I love, I want to shout it from the rooftops! Whether it be a more fun sandal or a classic pump, a good pair of heels can make you feel like a million bucks. See some of my favorites here, here, and here.

plaid - To me, plaid is like stripes. It's a print that can be worn really any way you want to. I've worn it to work. I've worn it out. I've pretty much wore it everywhere! It can be layered under a solid piece for a more subdued effect, or it can be the sole focus of your look. I've really grown to love plaid and all it's possibilities. See how I've mixed it up here, here, and here.

floral - I rarely feel more pretty and feminine than I do when I'm wearing floral. There is just something so ladylike about this print and I often find myself reaching for it for date night or another fancy occasion. See some pretty floral ensembles from the past here, here, and here.

otk boots - Over-the-knee boots were something I had to work my way into. I always though women looked so strong and sexy in them and I wasn't sure I could pull it off. Do you have any pieces you just don't feel "cool" enough to wear? Yeah, these used to be that for me. But, once I sucked it up and tried a pair, I was hooked! I'm only 5'3, so I thought they may swallow my already short legs, but in fact I think they give me the illusion of height! See some favorite looks here, here, and here.

leather - Disclaimer: when I say leather, I obviously mean faux leather. But, I truly think leather accessories/pieces can make a simple outfit look so super chic. The texture mixes so well with others and always looks extremely polished. Whether it be a bag, jacket, or leggings, a leather piece is my go-to to elevate my everyday looks.
